  • Ability to recognize when findings fall outside PT scope and require physician referral or further diagnostic workup
  • Sound clinical judgment in progressing, modifying, or discontinuing treatment based on patient response
  • Understanding of red flags and screening for serious pathology (cancer, fracture, infection, vascular conditions)

Leadership of the Care Team

  • Directing and supervising PTAs, athletic trainers, personal trainers, and support staff within their scope
  • Delegating appropriate patients and interventions to PTAs while maintaining overall responsibility for the plan of care
  • Conducting required supervisory visits and co-treatments in compliance with state and payer regulations
  • Creating a clinical environment where the whole team functions cohesively and patients experience seamless care

  • HIPAA compliance and professional boundaries with patients

Emotional Intelligence & Soft Skills

  • Empathy with patients navigating pain, fear, frustration, or significant life disruption due to injury or illness
  • Composure under pressure — difficult patients, high volumes, insurance denials, and administrative demands are daily realities
  • Adaptability across a constantly shifting patient mix and clinic environment

Professional Growth & Mentorship

  • Commitment to lifelong learning through CEUs, specialty certifications, and clinical research
  • Staying current with evidence and bringing new learning back to the team

Clinical Competency

  • Solid execution of PT-directed treatment plans across a broad range of conditions — orthopedic, neurological, post-surgical, and chronic pain
  • Proficiency in therapeutic exercise, manual therapy techniques, and standard modalities (e-stim, ultrasound, heat/ice, traction)
  • Familiarity with common outpatient diagnoses — low back pain, total joint replacements, shoulder impingement, post-fracture rehab, balance and fall prevention
  • Ability to progress or modify exercises within the established plan of care based on patient response

Patient Population Awareness

  • General outpatient clinics see a much wider demographic ( post-surgical patients, elderly, chronic pain sufferers, workers' compensation cases, and general orthopedic conditions)
  • Ability to adjust pace, communication style, and exercise intensity based on age, fitness level, and medical complexity
  • Comfort working with patients who may have multiple comorbidities — diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular conditions, osteoporosis
  • Patience with slower progressions common in older or more deconditioned populations

Communication & Patient Engagement

  • Clear, reassuring communication with patients who may be anxious, in significant pain, or unfamiliar with the rehab process
  • Strong patient education skills — explaining why exercises matter, what to expect during recovery, and how to manage symptoms at home
  • Empathy and active listening, particularly with chronic pain patients who may be frustrated or discouraged
  • Consistent updates to the supervising PT on patient progress, plateaus, or concerns

Organizational & Documentation Skills

  • Accurate and timely SOAP note documentation aligned with the PT's plan of care
  • Understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance documentation requirements — particularly important in outpatient settings
  • Awareness of the therapy cap, functional limitation reporting, and medical necessity documentation
  • Efficient caseload management across a full schedule of back-to-back patients

Efficiency & Time Management

  • General outpatient clinics often run high patient volumes with tight scheduling
  • Ability to manage multiple patients simultaneously when supervising independent exercise programs
  • Prioritizing hands-on time effectively within 30-60 minute treatment sessions
  • Staying organized and prepared so transitions between patients are smooth

Professional Development

  • Continuing education in areas common to general outpatient (manual therapy, dry needling where permitted, pain science, geriatric rehab)
  • Interest in evidence-based practice across a broad diagnostic range
  • Openness to mentorship and feedback from supervising PTs

-

Athletic Trainer

Clinical & Technical Skills

  • Strong foundation in anatomy, biomechanics, and injury assessment
  • Proficiency in therapeutic modalities (ultrasound, e-stim, dry needling, etc.)
  • Competence in manual therapy techniques and therapeutic exercise prescription
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation protocols across injury types and populations

Communication & Interpersonal Skills

  • Clear communication with patients, PT staff, physicians, and insurers
  • Ability to educate patients on injury, recovery expectations, and home programs
  • Active listening and empathy — patients are often in pain or frustrated
  • Collaborative mindset to function within a multidisciplinary team

Adaptability & Clinical Reasoning

  • Ability to transition from a sports-focused model to a broader patient population (post-surgical, chronic pain, elderly, pediatric)
  • Strong critical thinking to modify treatment plans based on patient response
  • Comfortable working within physician referral and insurance-driven frameworks

Organizational & Administrative Skills

  • Accurate and timely documentation (SOAP notes, progress reports)
  • Understanding of billing codes, insurance authorization, and compliance
  • Time management across a full patient caseload

Professional & Regulatory Awareness

  • Knowledge of state practice act limitations for ATs in clinical settings (varies significantly by state)
  • Willingness to pursue continuing education (e.g., OCS, CSCS, dry needling certifications)
  • Understanding of how AT scope of practice complements — not duplicates — the PT's role

Mindset Factors

  • Patient-centered focus rather than performance-centered (a shift from traditional sports AT roles)
  • Humility to work under PT supervision when required by law or setting
  • Resilience and patience — clinical rehab timelines are longer than sport return-to-play

Personal Trainer

Exercise Science Foundation

  • Strong knowledge of functional movement, progressive overload, and exercise programming
  • Familiarity with common post-rehab conditions (joint replacements, rotator cuff repairs, ACL reconstruction, low back pain)
  • Ability to modify exercises for pain, limited range of motion, or physical restrictions
  • Understanding of basic anatomy and how injury affects movement patterns

Communication Skills

  • Clear, motivating communication with a patient population that may be fearful, deconditioned, or in chronic pain
  • Ability to explain exercises simply and check for understanding
  • Regular, structured updates to the supervising PT on patient progress or concerns
  • Sensitivity and patience — this population differs significantly from typical gym clients

Adaptability

  • Comfortable shifting from high-energy fitness coaching to a slower, more methodical clinical pace
  • Ability to work with diverse ages, body types, and fitness levels
  • Flexible programming when a patient has a setback or bad pain day

Professional & Administrative Skills

  • Accurate session notes and progress tracking
  • Understanding of HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements
  • Punctuality and reliability — PT schedules are tightly structured
  • Genuine interest in the *health and function* of patients, not just aesthetics or performance
  • Continuous learning mentality, especially around injury and post-rehab populations
  • Empathy and encouragement for patients who may be struggling or discouraged

Preferred Credentials

  • NSCA, ACSM, NASM, or ACE certification (most recognized in clinical adjacent settings)
  • NASM's Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) or Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES)
  • CPR/AED certification (required)
  • Additional coursework in corrective exercise, post-rehab, or senior fitness
